Bug Bungalows!

A Bug Bungalow is a cozy, multi-room shelter designed for all sorts of beneficial insects looking for safe nesting spots or winter hideaways.

With more urban spaces and fewer natural habitats, many native insects struggle to find enough places to live and feed. Bug bungalows give them safe nesting and shelter options, helping maintain healthy insect populations.

By attracting beneficial bugs to your garden, you’re also inviting natural pest managers—ladybugs, for example, help keep aphids in check, while pollinators like bees and butterflies will support our plants to thrive!

Location is key for a buzzing success! Here’s a quick guide:

  • Damp, shady areas are ideal for woodlice, beetles, and earwigs, who love dark, moist conditions.
  • Sunny, dry spots are preferred by bees, butterflies, and other sun-loving insects that prefer warmth.

Try a few different spots to see what works best for your garden and insect guests.

Protect your bug bungalow from heavy rain and predators, if after a season the rooms remain empty, consider adjusting the location until you find the perfect spot.

Can I Paint/Decorate My Bug Bungalow?
Absolutely! Just keep it natural and insect-friendly. Use water-based, non-toxic paints to ensure it’s safe for insects, and avoid strong scents or chemicals that could drive them away.

To keep the natural look that bugs prefer, choose finishes that protect the wood without overwhelming its texture or scent.

Once painted, allow the bungalow to dry fully before opening it up to guests.
